Reciprocating Development – GSLIS and Community Organizations

Mix IT Up! will team with community organizations that serve youth in order to support the information literacy goals of these organization.  Scholars will be placed in long-term partnership within these organizations to help design and implement programming, support organizational development, and work closely with youth in youth directed projects.

By leveraging our resources, Mix IT Up! will help address the effects of reduced funding within these organizations.  At the same time, placement within organizations will provide much needed experiecne for talented GSLIS students.  These partnerships will increase knowledge about successful positive youth development activities as well as growth in positive attitudes about intergenerational community-based librarianship.

Many GSLIS courses have focused on creating community-institution partnerships and have focused on community engagement.  Mix IT Up! builds off of this work by creating long-term placements that allow for a greater depth of knowledge about and engagement with an organization while at the same time ensuring that community organizations will be able to draw on student expertise that is framed within the goals of each specific organization.
